Recently, a research paper entitled “Single-cell transcriptome reveals the cellular response to PEG induced stress in wheat leaves” was published by the breeding laboratory of wheat center of Institute of Cereal and Oil Crops of HAAFS in Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, a top journal in zone 1 of agriculture and forestry sciences. This study systematically analyzed the drought-related response mechanisms of drought-nonsusceptible and susceptible wheat seedlings under PEG induction by using single-cell transcriptome technology. Firstly, the cell atlas of wheat leaves was identified and constructed using the known marker genes. On this basis, several new marker genes specific to cell types were identified, providing a reference for the subsequent identification of wheat cell types. In addition, this study found cellular heterogeneity in drought-related response mechanisms and their regulatory pathways among different cell types. Meanwhile, different cell types work in coordination with each other to form a complex drought-related response mechanism. This research not only provides new insights into the drought-related response mechanisms of wheat at the single-cell level, but also offers important genetic resources for the breeding of drought-tolerant wheat varieties.
