Recently, a research paper entitled “Domestication-associated PHYTOCHROME C is a flowering time repressor and a key factor determining Setaria as a short-day plant” was jointly published online by research teams of Institute of Dryland Farming of HAAFS and Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences in New phytologist.

It was found that SiPHIC was involved in the domestication process from Setaria viridis(green foxtail) to Setaria italica(foxtail millet). This study systematically analyzed the repression function of SiPHIC on flowering, and confirmed that it was an important determinant of short-day plants. This study not only provided new insights into plant response to photoperiod, enriched the scientific understanding of the function of phytochrome genes, but also further improved the technology system of functional gene identification and efficient research of millet, laying a foundation for promoting the research system development of millet as a model plant and promoting the identification and research of stress resistance and quality related genes of Panicoideae species especially C4.
